Beginning Runner Program

Can I call myself a runner if I only run 30 seconds at a time? A runwalker, maybe.

I did it!

Last night, I laced up my shoes, grabbed my winter coat and headed out to the park. I was self-conscious that I’d look silly and I hoped beyond hopes that the park would be empty so people wouldn’t see me running intervals, especially *actual* runners and people I know. My husband, who is pretty fit, used to run and is active, said he’d join me. One of my kids came with us, too. Out we went! I put an interval timer on my phone that beeped whenever I needed to run and beeped again to indicate the walk times. We did 8 intervals of 30 seconds running and 4:30 walking plus a 5 minute cool down, and it felt great! My tendon didn’t ache. I even looked forward to the running bits.

See this picture? That’s how I imagine myself in the future. Visualize. Visualize. Visualize. Work. Work. Work.

Right now my fitness is such that at 30 seconds of running, I started getting a little winded. That’s not great, but it never felt impossible. And you know what? I’m so glad I started!

    • I started using Simple Interval Timer and then tried Runkeeper. I think I’ll keep using Runkeeper as I like that it tracks my distance and pace, too.
